Police Arrest 4 Suspected Car Thieves at Redeemed Christian Church in Lekki
PUNCH reports that the police have arrested four suspected thieves for allegedly attempting to steal a Range Rover parked in the premises of the Redeemed Christian Church of God on Admiralty Way in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
According to reports, the thieves had gone for a Sunday service at RCCG and it was during prayers that they left the hall to steal the Range Rover. It was a church worker who was patrolling the premises that saw one of the men inside the car and confronted him, asking if the car was his. When the suspect could not give a satisfactory response, the worker reportedly alerted the church’s security men.
The three other suspects, who were said to have been waiting outside the church compound for their partner, immediately took to their heels when they realised he had been caught. The guards reportedly chased and apprehended them and then handed them over to the police at the Maroko division.
The suspects, however, denied the allegations. The one found inside the car claims he was only trying to help the owner of the car, after he discovered the headlights of the car was on. “After the service on that day, my friends and I decided to take some pictures and we posed with some cars parked on the premises, including the Range Rover. I discovered that its headlight was on and I opened the door to see if I could put off the ignition” he stated. His friends also repeated the same story, saying they warned him not to enter the car.
The suspects have been charged on two counts of attempted stealing, despite pleading not guilty. The presiding magistrate, Mrs. M.B. Folami, granted them bail in the sum of N200,000 each with one surety each in like sum.
The case was adjourned till July 22, 2016.
