An Italian man Amedeo Mancini has been arrested for the murder of Nigerian man Emmanuel Chidi in Italy.

Earlier on, we reported that Chidi and his wife Chinyere were walking down the streets of Paolo Calcinora when a football hooligan began to throw racial insults at them. This led to an altercation and Chidi was physically attacked with a steel signpost and brutally beaten on the head until he lost consciousness. He later passed on at a local hospital.

Chidi and Chinyere, who lost their parents and daughter during a Boko Haram attack in northern Nigeria, had been living in the small town for eight months after arriving Europe through the Mediterranean Sea. Chinyere is said to also have lost her pregnancy due to the perilous sea crossing. They were lodged in a shelter run by Catholic charity, Caritas.

Now, the suspected murderer identified as 35-year-old Amaedeo Mancini has been nabbed by the police. According to Punch, Mancini was arrested this morning, now he will be prosecuted for the xenophobic killing.

Meanwhile, the Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, has taken to Twitter to condemn the killing and describe it as “hatred, racism and violence”. Also, the Interior Minister Angelino Alfano attended a security meeting in Fermo today where they reached the agreement to grant Chinyere refugee status in Italy.

Other reactions come from Laura Boldrini, president of the chamber of deputies, who expressed “dismay” and “outrage” on hearing the news, adding that “a man who escaped the ferocity of Boko Haram terrorists in his country was killed, here in Italy, because of hatred, racism and xenophobia”.
