President Buhari Reacts To Lagos Inferno
President Muhammadu Buhari has joined millions of Nigerians reacting to the fire last evening at the Otedola Bridge in Lagos in which many people are feared killed with tens of vehicles burnt.
The fuel-laden tanker burst into flames on the Otedola Bridge after being hit by a commercial vehicle, causing bedlam among residents.
The president, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Malam Garba Shehu, said he was very sad to learn of the tragic loss of lives, tens of vehicles, property and other valuables in the petrol tanker fire, Daily Trust writes.
Malam Shehu said Buhari expressed his deepest condolences to the government and people of Lagos on the tragedy.
“Sadly, this seems to be one of the greatest tragedies we have seen in recent times,” the president said.
The spokesman said the president urged the emergency services and law enforcement officials to do their best to limit the losses and damage from the incident, saying that the priority “now is to save those people who could still be in danger.”
The Otedola bridge fire comes bare days after over 100 people were killed in several Plateau villages in brutal attacks by armed Fulani herdsmen as Nigerians grapple with a series of tragedies.
It remains unclear what steps the Lagos State government will take to contain the menace of petrol tankers.
