President Buhari Summons IGP Idris For Disobedience

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday summoned the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to answer query as to why he breached a Presidential order to relocate to Benue State in the wake of killings by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

After the massacre that claimed over 73 lives at the turn of the year, Buhari had on Jan. 9 directed the Inspector-General to move to Benue with a view to check the bloodlust of rampaging Fulani herdsmen.

But the president, during his official visit to Benue on Monday, said he was shocked to learn that Mr Idris only spent 24 hours in Benue before jetting off to neigbouring Nasarawa state.

The embattled IGP was reportedly in the Presidential villa apparently to explain his flouting of the President’s order to remain in Benue at the height of the incidence between farmers and herdsmen, The Nation writes.

Villa sources say he left the president’s office 30 minutes later without saying a word to anyone.

“It is believed that the president demanded for a full report on police operations till date after which he will make further decisions,” a source said.

“There is a renewed resolve to make sure that the killings and bad security situation in Benue State abates.”

Idris came under heavy criticism after the Benue massacre with many calling for his resignation for failing to carry out his basic duty of protecting lives and property.

He was also slated for a perceived partisan stand after his faceoff with Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom.
