Ronaldo and I Have no Relationship – Messi Reveals

There may be a big disappointment for those hoping to see some sort of post-career coziness between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the Barcelona ace has revealed that they have no relationship and only really speak at awards ceremonies.

This is somewhat contrary to the claim by Real Madrid star, Ronaldo, that himself and Messi put their on-field rivalry behind them and actually do enjoy a good relationship.

But Messi has given the lie to the claim, saying the great rivals have nothing in common beyond the beautiful game, Goal writes.

“I don’t know if we will be [friends],” Messi told Spanish newspaper Marca.

“Friendship is built through spending time together and getting to know each other.

“We have no relationship, mainly because we only see each other at awards ceremonies and that’s the only time we speak. Everything is fine, but our lives don’t cross over very often.”

Ronaldo is the favourite to win the Ballon d’Or again this year and tie Messi on five gongs, but the Barca no 10 believes their dominance of the awards will be broken in the near future as other players have stepped up.

“There are many great players around today who can win the Ballon d’Or,” the 30-year-old said.

“In recent years there have just been two, but now players like Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Luis Suarez can compete for that award.”

Messi accepted the European Golden Shoe award on Friday, the fourth of his career, to draw level with great rival Ronaldo, and Barca announced a day later that the Argentine playmaker had signed a three-year extension to his current deal to keep him at the Camp Nou until 2021.

With Ronaldo still at Madrid, football’s greatest rivalry may yet run for a few more years…
