Sam Smith, Post Malone & More Mourn Rapper Lil Peep Who Died of Drug Overdose
The music industry is mourning rapper Lil Peep who died on Wednesday night of drug overdose.
Variety reports that yesterday, the rapper whose real name is Gustav Åhr, posted an Instagram video saying he was “lit” after taking “six Xanax”. “When I die You’ll love me,” he said later in a photo shared on his page.
Shortly after the disturbing post, his music manager, Adam Grandmaison, told The Guardian that the rapper was rushed to hospital to be treated of drug overdose but passed on.
Fans also noted that the rapper’s brother Bexey shared a video of Peep seemingly dead in the tour bus. That video was quickly deleted and his brother returned to say he didn’t know that Peep was already dead, that the image will haunt him everyday.
“My brother just died in my arms, man,” Bexey said in a subsequent video posted on his Instagram page. “I’m done with this sh*t, man, forever. F**k this sh*t.”
The rapper’s Peep’s manager, Chase Ortega, later went on Twitter to confirm fans’ fears. “I’ve been expecting this call for a year. Mother f—,” he wrote on Thursday.
The death was also confirmed by the rapper’s record company CEO, Sarah Stennett, CEO of First Access Entertainment, who partnered with Peep in early 2016.
Here’s what she told Variety:
“I am shocked and heartbroken. I do not believe Peep wanted to die, this is so tragic. He had big goals and dreams for the future which he had shared with me, his team, his family and his friends. He was highly intelligent, hugely creative, massively charismatic, gentle and charming. He had huge ambition and his career was flourishing.”
“I have spoken to his mother and she asked me to convey that she is very, very proud of him and everything he was able to achieve in his short life. She is truly grateful to the fans and the people who have supported and loved him.”
Lil Peep, born Gustav Åhr, reportedly grew up in Long Beach, New York and kicked off his career on YouTube, before going on to release successful EPs and mixtapes. He dropped his first album, Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1, in August. In his songs, the rapper tackled issues bordering on his depression and sexuality.
He was 21.
Presently, top acts like Post Malone and Sam Smith and Peep’s ex Bella Thorne, are mourning the late rapper.
