Stay Away From Corruption, Magu Urges Students

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 charged Nigerian students to stay away from all forms of corrupt practices and see themselves as future leaders of the country.

Magu made this call while receiving students and teachers of Smabirm International School, Ilorin, Kwara State, who came on a courtesy visit to the Ilorin Zonal Office of the Commission.

The Commission’s boss who was represented by the Ilorin Zonal Head of the EFCC, Isyiaku Sharu informed the students of the dangers of corruption and urged them and all Nigerians to assist the Commission in its fight against corruption.

“My Children, I am glad to receive you this afternoon. This is the first time we are receiving students in this zone. Let me remind you about the dangers of corruption in our society. The world has become a Global Village. Corruption deters foreign investors from coming to our country. All hands must be on deck to fight the menace,” Magu said.

He took time to educate the students on the history, operations and running of the Commission.

“The Commission was established in the year 2003. The mandate of the Commission is to fight all forms of financial crimes and terrorism funding.

“Terrorism is a violent crime but we trace the funding. We take all our cases to the Federal and State High Courts. We partner both private and public sectors in the fight against corruption,” he said.

The EFCC boss stated further that the primary responsibility of the Commission was to prevent crime and investigate people living above their income in accordance with Section 7 of the EFCC Establishment Act, which empowers the Commission “to cause an investigation on anyone who is leaving his income.”

The Head-Mistress of the school, Mrs Olukotu Yemisi, thanked the Ilorin Zonal Office of the EFCC for its efforts in sanitizing Kwara State, stating that the purpose of the visit was to familiarize the students with the workings of the Commission.

“We are here on educational visit to know how the EFCC has helped the society and understand the operations of the Commission.

Yemisi further disclosed that there is an anti-corruption club in the school as part of the school’s efforts to support the fight against corruption.
