Terrorism Financing: Commandant Charges Students To Master The Art Of Tracking Terror Funds
The Commandant, Nigerian Army Intelligence School (NAIS), Brigadier General David Umaru, has charged students of the school to acquire and master, the techniques for tracking concealed funds used in sponsoring terrorism and other violent crimes. The Commandant gave the charge at a lecture organized to broaden the knowledge of personnel on methods of tracking and identifyers of concealed funds used for terrorism financing.
The lecture, delivered by Assistant Commander of Economic Crime II (ACE II) Ahmad Sagir, of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), titled “How Financial Networks and Illicit Funding Support Extremist Groups in Nigeria,” was aimed at enhancing the students’ ability to identify financial indicators, support investigations and contribute to efforts at disrupting criminal networks.
In his lecture, ACE II Sagir explained how extremist groups source, move and conceal funds to sustain their operations. He guided the students on identifying and reporting indicators of illicit financial activity during military operations, and stressed the importance of inter-agency cooperation in combating terrorism financing. He noted that denying these groups access to funds is critical to degrading their capacity to recruit, procure weapons and sustain attacks.
The Commandant, Brigadier General Umaru, noted that the engagement aligns with the Chief of Army Staff’s Command Philosophy of building a professional Nigerian Army capable of operating effectively in a joint and multi-agency environment. He noted that the knowledge gained would strengthen the capacity of intelligence personnel to support ongoing operations, while fostering closer cooperation with the EFCC and other security agencies.
The lecture ended with the presentation of souvenirs and a group photograph to commemorate the visit and further strengthen the relationship between the Nigerian Army Intelligence School and the EFCC.
