Victor Anichebe Accuses His Club Of Match-Fixing
Former Premier League star Victor Anichebe has reported his own club to Fifa over allegations of match fixing.
The 30-year-old lodged the complaint after claiming he was asked “not to try” twice Beijing Enterprises’ coaching staff, including a clash against their local rivals.
Ex-Everton, West Brom and Sunderland striker Anichebe questioned the instructions but claimed his team-mates told him: “This is China, we do as we’re told.”
He has been in dispute with the club since last October and has taken legal advice for his case.
The Daily Mail report “Manchester-based sports lawyer Chris Farnell approached Beijing’s general manager on Anichebe’s behalf” but he has been ignored by the Chinese Super League club’s officials twice.
The Nigerian international has not refused to play for Enterprise but has cost him a year of his career, meaning he missed out on the chance to represent his country at the World Cup.
The club have still not denied his allegation, which the towering frontman has taken to football’s governing body and hopes will lead to action soon.
It is not the first time Chinese football has been plunged into match-fixing chaos.
Back in 2003 Shanghai Shenhua were tripped of the title while five years ago the Chinese FA fined 12 clubs £103,000 and banned 58 officials, players and referees after a three-year investigation into match-fixing and bribery.
Shenhua denied claims last year and threatened legal action after questions were raised following a 2-2 draw with Jiangsu Suning and the FA have also investigated similar allegations against Tianjin Quanjian and Teda.
