It’s no secret that Nigerian football is on a decline, but female football undoubtedly is the worst hit, particularly the Nigeria Women Football League.

Fans of the women’s game in Nigeria took to Twitter to voice their concerns over the league’s rapid slide into anonymity, calling on the authorities to intervene ahead of this season’s kick-off on May 21.

Leading the call for a revival in the women’s game in Nigeria is Mrs Matilda Oyiloha, team manager of the league champions, Rivers Angels who decried ‘too many irregularities’ in the division.

She complained that teams such as Pelican Stars and Taraba Queens were brought back into the league failing to honour more than three games last season.

She appealed to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to save Nigeria football, with emphasis on sponsorship and expertise.

“Give us an independent body, when you go out there, there’re quality consultants and good companies that can come to the aid of women football,” she said.

Though the women’s game is still struggling for popularity here, a lot of fans hopped on the #SaveTheNWFL trend, claiming the weak league is already having a negative effect on the female national team, the Super Falcons.

The NFF Twitter handle (@thenff) has so far remained silent on the issue, but we hope it wont be for too long.
