Arrest Of An Impostor Parading Self As Nigerian Air Force Personnel With Intent To Defraud Family Of Late NAF Pilot

This is to inform the general public that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has apprehended one Mr Olusegun Abe, who was parading himself as Flight Lieutenant SA Abe, in Akure, Ondo State, on 2 June 2020. The impostor, who was fully dressed in a Nigerian military woodland camouflage uniform, but wrongly wearing the rank of a Wing Commander in the place of that of a Flight Lieutenant, was on the verge of defrauding a family member of a late NAF pilot, by asking her to hand over the originals of some sensitive documents, which he intended to use in claiming the benefits of the late NAF officer.

2. The family member, having suspected a fraudulent intent, contacted the acting Commander of the NAF 209 Quick Response Group (QRG), located in Ipetu ijesha, Osun State, who immediately dispatched a team of Intelligence and Air Police personnel to the area where the suspect was finally arrested at about 1830 hours on the said date. After preliminary interrogation, the suspect will, today, be handed over to the Nigerian Police Headquarters in Akure for further investigations and prosecution.

3. The NAF wishes to reassure the general public that the Service is a professional and disciplined organization that is focused on the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities. Accordingly, the NAF will not condone any act capable of tarnishing its image, either by its personnel or any other individuals. We, therefore, implore the general public and families of deceased personnel to continually direct all enquiries on payment of death benefits to the Nigerian Military Pensions Board, headquartered in Abuja, and should desist from engaging intermediaries, who are mostly fraudulent and always scavenging for unsuspecting victims to defraud. The public is also encouraged to immediately report any attempt to defraud them of their loved one’s benefits to the Police or any military establishment closest to them.
