Bayern Munich have named former coach Jupp Heynckes as their manager until the end of the season following the sack of Carlo Ancelotti last week.

Ancelotti was shown the door last week after Bayern’s humiliating Champions League loss at Paris Saint-Germain.

It will be a fourth spell for Heynckes at Bayern, who left the role in 2013 after guiding the side to a historic Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup treble.

“I would not have returned to any other club in the world,” the 72-year-old tactician said.

“Bayern Munich is very close to my heart. My coaching staff and I will now do everything to bring back successful football for the fans. I’m very much looking forward to this challenge.”

Former Real Madrid manager Heynckes had considered quitting the game in 2013 after he was replaced by Pep Guardiola, but he will now take over at the Allianz Arena on Monday in preparation for their Bundesliga clash at home to SC Freiburg on Saturday 14 October.

His immediate task will be to unite the dressing room that went into chaos during the final days of Ancelotti at the club.

The Bavarians presently trail table-toppers Borussia Dortmund by five points.
