Borno State Marks Global Hand Washing Day In Command Day Secondary School
Fifteenth (15th) October of every year is a day set aside by UNICEF as Global Hand Washing Day. This day is to advocate for a culture of hand washing around the world and to increase awareness and understanding the importance of hand washing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives. This year in Borno State the Honorable Commissioner of Water Resources – Dr Zainab Gimba led other dignitaries to enlighten the students and pupils of Command Day Secondary School (CDSS) and Command Children School in Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri on the importance of washing hand with soap and flowing water.
According to the commissioner; “the day it is a day set aside to celebrate Hand washing across the Globe to ensure safety and healthy living. Adding that it would also ensure kids learn the idea of washing their hands regularly to avoid contacting infectious diseases”.
She also noted that most communicable diseases are easily carried by hands, giving examples of cases of diarrhea and pneumonia which are caused by poor hygiene condition. She urged the students and pupils to always wash their hands before eating and after making use of toilet facilities.
The commissioner, Dr Zainab Gimba, the representative of the Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC), 7 Division Colonel John Medugu and other invited guests participated in a symbolic hand washing presentation before the students and pupils of the Command Day Primary and Secondary took turn to wash their hands and were presented with a bar soap each. The occasion was graced by personalities from Borno State Government as well as 7 Division Nigerian Army.
