Chief of Defence Staff Charges Joint Task Force Commanders on Intelligence Sharing, Synergy to Address Threats, Insurgency

In a bid to effectively address a multitude of threats, ranging from insurgency, terrorism, and cybercrime to transnational organized crime, separatist movements, and inter-communal conflicts, the Chief of Defence Staff, (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa on Friday has charged Joint Task Force Commanders to emphasize the importance of intelligence sharing and collaboration both within and across joint task forces.

The CDS gave this charge today, 15th, September 2023 at the Chief of Defence Joint Task Force Commanders Conference 2023 with the theme, “Rejigging Defence Headquarters led Operations”, aimed at underscoring the vital importance of collaboration and synergy among the various branches of our armed forces.

The Joint Task Force Commanders Conference represents a significant milestone in the military collective pursuit of national security and the preservation of peace within Nigeria.

The CDS noted that the exchange of timely and accurate information is the lifeblood of successful operations. By breaking down silos and fostering a culture of information sharing, we can enhance situational awareness, Improve decision-making processes, and promote seamless coordination among our forces.

While acknowledging the invaluable support received from international partners, the CDS charged all Joint Task Force Commanders to provide clear guidance, inspire their troops, lead by example and further strengthen strong partnerships and collaboration and relationships with international allies and explore opportunities for joint training, intelligence sharing, and capacity building.

“Our nation looks up to us to ensure their safety, security, and wellbeing. Let us be guided by the principles of professionalism, integrity, and respect for human rights as we discharge our duties. Let us be vigilant, resourceful, and adaptive in the face of evolving threats. And let us never lose sight of the fact that our ultimate goal is a peaceful, prosperous, and united Nigeria.” he said

The CDS also charged them to recognize the significance of capacity building and training in maintaining operational readiness. He said as commanders, it is incumbent to ensure that their personnel are equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to carry out their duties effectively. 

“Continuous professional development, realistic and rigorous training exercises, and the cultivation of a learning culture are essential ingredients for success in this ever-evolving security landscape. Equally important is the need to engage with the communities we serve. 

“The success of our operations depends not only on our military prowess but also on the trust and support of the local populace. We must strive to build strong relationships with the communities in which we operate, listening to their concerns, addressing their grievances, and providing them with the security and stability they deserve. By doing so, we can effectively isolate the adversaries and win the hearts and minds of the people.” he stressed.

The Chief of Defence Staff therefore commended the unwavering commitment, dedication, and sacrifice to protect the country, which has not gone unnoticed. He commended their courage and professionalism in the face of diverse challenges and assured them their contributions are deeply valued.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chief of Defence Training and Operations, Major General EV Onumajuru noted that the purpose of the conference is to provide an opportunity for a briefing with the Chief of Defence Staff by the JTF Commanders and also a comprehensive evaluation of various operations within view to chart a new cause to addressing national security challenges.

He added that other pillars of the comprehensive evaluation programme include the field assessment visits that are currently ongoing in all joint operation areas. 

At the conference were the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, departmental Chiefs, Services Chiefs of Operations, Commanders of Joint Task Forces, Force Commander MNJTF, Directors of the Defence Headquarters and Services Headquarters, and Senior principal staff Officers.
