FG Hands Over Stream And Erosion Control Project In Ago Iwoye, Ogun State

The Federal Government has handed over a newly constructed stream and erosion control project to the Ago Iwoye community of ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The project located along the Olabisi Onabanjo University road was commissioned on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari by the Minster for Communication Adebayo Shittu.

Speaking at the occasion, the minister noted that the project is one of eleven ecological intervention projects approved on August 17 2017 by President Buhari for the third quarter of the same year.

He said “The age long problem of gully erosion and flooding in this part of the country cannot be overemphasized.

“I have no doubt in my mind that this federal government intervention will bring a huge relief to the community which has for a very long time been stressed by these ecological challenges”

The minister also charged the Ago- Iwoye Community to cherish the laudable project by preventing indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainage channels.

He said It was the responsibility of the community to own and maintain it to ensure its sustainability and noted that “at this critical moment of our nation building and economic recovery, there is no doubt that the project will provide a window of opportunities for economic growth of the Community”

On her part,the Permanent Secretary Ecological Fund Office, Dr. Habiba Lawal implored the benefiting community to achieve the dual purpose of take over as well as exercise ownership of the project

This she said is necessary to ensure its maintenance and sustainability.

Dr Lawal noted that the resources committed by the Federal Government to the project must not be allowed to waste.

Also speaking at the occasion, the member representing Ijebu North federal constituency in the House of Representatives Adesegun Adesanya said the project is the best thing that could happen not only to Ago-Iwoye but also his constituency as a whole.

Hon. Adesanya who was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said the project coming from a first time President is unprecedented

He added that Ago-Iwoye which is a community with 65,000 registered voters would reciprocate the good gesture come February 16 2019.

Members of the community thanked President Buhari for doing a great job across the country without considering the political affiliation of the benefiting communities.

They also commended the Ecological office and the project contractor for working tirelessly to ensure minimum loss of time in its execution

The people described the act as a true example of change and what the administration stands for.

The stream and erosion control project is meant to tackle the menace of flooding in Ago-Iwoye community along River Moliweri. .

Until now, many people living in the community abandon their buildings during the raining season as a result of flooding, but since the project started and throughout the 2018 raining season, there was no record of flooding in the area.

It involves the construction of Six culverts along the river, 1200m length of Asphaltic road and also 1400m length of side drains .
