The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, Nigerian Army, and Commander, Joint Task Force South-East Operation UDO KA, Major General Oluremi Fadairo, has emphasized that investing in the welfare of troops is synonymous with investing in the security of the nation. He made this assertion during the commissioning of a 30-family Corporal and Below Quarters at Abakpa Cantonment, Enugu.
Speaking at the event, the GOC noted that the project was designed to enhance troop welfare and morale by providing modern, conducive living spaces for soldiers and their families. He stressed that, “Investing in the welfare of our troops is investing in the security of our nation. When soldiers are well catered for, their commitment to duty is strengthened.”
Major General Fadairo expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen W Shaibu for prioritizing the well-being of personnel, highlighting that the initiative has positively impacted morale and strengthened the operational readiness of the Division. He urged beneficiaries of the new facility to take ownership and uphold a strong maintenance culture to ensure sustainability. Furthermore, he encouraged commanders across the Division to replicate similar initiatives that directly enhance personnel welfare and operational effectiveness.
Earlier, the Chief of Staff, 44 Engineer Brigade, Colonel DS Mageem, commended the GOC for prioritizing the commissioning despite his demanding schedule. He observed that the project aligns with the Command Philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, which places troop welfare, professional development, and operational efficiency at the core of the Nigerian Army’s transformation agenda.
Highlights of the event included the formal commissioning and unveiling of the quarters, an inspection tour of the facilities, and the symbolic presentation of keys to beneficiaries. The ceremony concluded with a group photograph.
