Kiprotich Wins Access Bank Lagos City Marathon
Abraham Kiprotich has emerged winner of the 2018 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon 42km race.
Kiprotich, 32, set a new record in the race by finishing it in a time of 2:15:04 to beat the previous record of 2 hours, 16 minutes and 21 seconds set by Ethiopian Abraham Kipton in 2016.
The Kenyan long-distance runner will take home the $50,000 prize money for his feat.
Ilya Pam won the indigenous race with 2hrs 27mins as Nigerians once again fell well short of East-Africans participating in the event.
In his speech during the prize presentation ceremony, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State made it clear that more was expected of Nigerian athletes.
“We’re at the Bronze level of marathons, but we want to get it to the Gold level, in the next two years,” Ambode said.
“We’re tired of giving these trophies to the East Africans. We’ll be committing resources to training our Nigerian athletes so they can win the marathon”
