Leadership Tussle: Police Cordon Off Edo Assembly

The Police on Monday surrounded the premises of the Edo State House of Assembly to prevent the outbreak of violence following last week’s leadership tussle in the assembly.

Crisis erupted last Wednesday after 16 members of the assembly removed the erstwhile Speaker of the House, Victor Edoro and appointed Elizabeth Ativie, as the new Speaker.

More than 10 Hilux patrol vans and an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) were seen around the assembly complex on Monday morning, PM News is reporting.

There were also regular and mobile police operatives positioned at the three entrances to the assembly to prevent access into the complex.

Workers of the assembly are being prevented by the police from getting to their offices.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Abiodun Osifo said that the action was taken to “avoid repetition of what happened last Wednesday at the complex”.

Suspected thugs, loyal to both sides, had after the speaker’s removal, taken over the assembly complex, shooting at one another.
