The Nigerian Dancing Barber-Shop in London

2014Every Nigerian man wants to look good, wherever in the world he is – and London is no exception! At Starrz Men’s Hair Salon in Canning Street, London – the shop is full until midnight!

“We open at 10.30am and I will finish at 11pm,” says Segun, one of the barbers at the shop. “We cut maybe 20 to 30 peoples hair in a day.”

But this is not just a hairdressers salon. Nigerians come from across the UK to talk about home, Nigerian politics, Nollywood, buy Nigerian cloth, and even send money back to their families at the money transfer shop tucked into the corner.

“I’ve been coming here for 12 years,” says one customer. “People come here to share their view about life, the state of the country, politics, you name it – anything!”

The best styles in vogue with Nigerian men in London at the moment include: “Fade”, “Waves”, “Punk”, “One-Level” and “Obama”. Cost of a cut is roughly from £5-£10 depending on the style.

“We have a lot of Nigerians, Ghanians, West African people. And they keep on coming because this is like a Nigerian Embassy,” explains Segun.”

And if people want to know about getting a job, mortgage, or just find new friends from Nigeria in London this is the place to come.
