Osun Couple To Die by Hanging for theft and murder

A couple in Osun State will die by hanging for killing a woman, after they stole 48 jerrycans of palm oil she entrusted in their care.

The Osun State High Court sitting in Ile Ife heard that Fatai Jimoh and Lateefat Jimoh killed Bukola Taiwo of Ikeketu, Ile-Ife, the Punch reports.

Taiwo who was on a business trip slept over at the Jimoh’s apartment. She also kept 70 jerrycans of palm oil with them but on her return from a business trip in Ibadan she discovered that the couple had stolen 48 out of the 70 jerrycans. When she confronted them they promised to pay for the missing kegs of palm oil. However, they attacked her later that night. She died in the hospital.

The convicts were arraigned on June 2, 2014, on three counts of murder, conspiracy to murder and armed robbery respectively.
The court heard that Fatai strangled the victim, while his wife smashed Taiwo’s head with a hammer. They also stole  N48,780, from her purse.

The Principal State Counsel, Mr. Faremi Moses, presented the hammer which the couple used on the deceased and other exhibits before the court.

Justice Onibokun, in his judgment, said the wife’s confessional statement to the police was taken as paramount and her confession was true.

Onibokun said, “The evidence of the prosecutor is cogent, reliable and credible, and the accused are therefore found guilty of murder and armed robbery after careful examination of the facts before the court.

“I hereby sentence them to death by hanging for murder and armed robbery, while they are discharged for conspiracy.”
