John Legend called it “very disappointing” that his friend Kanye West made a trip this week to visit Donald Trump.

“I don’t think it’s impossible to talk to (Trump) about issues, but I won’t be used as a publicity stunt. I think Kanye was a publicity stunt,” Legend told the French outlet Clique, in a video since published on RollingStone.com.

Legend and wife Chrissy Teigen, who are friends with West and Kim Kardashian, were strong advocates for Hillary Clinton during the election, and Legend has past engaged in a war of words with Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., on Twitter.

West made a highly publicised visit to see the president-elect at Trump Tower on Tuesday in New York City, afterward tweeting they discussed “multicultural issues.” The rapper said “these issues included bullying, supporting teachers, modernizing curriculums, and violence in Chicago. I feel it is important to have a direct line of communication with our future President if we truly want change.”

No matter what the purpose of West’s recent visit to Trump Tower, Legend called the rapper’s backing of Trump a disappointment.

“I think Trump has been corrosive, his message has been corrosive to the country,” Legend added in the new interview. “I think the things he’s promised to do have been very concerning for a lot of people, and for Kanye to support that message is very disappointing. Whatever’s in his mind, I disagree with him.”

West, 39, caused controversy last month when he publicly declared that, had he voted in the 2016 presidential election at all, he would have voted for Donald Trump. That declaration from West, who once said that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” during a 2005 telethon for Hurricane Katrina victims, shocked and angered many of his fans.

At that November concert, West said that he’s “glad Trump inspired racists to reveal themselves.”

Following their visit, Trump gave West a signed copy of his Time  ‘Person of the Year’ cover, calling him a “great friend.”
