PDP chair: Ex-senate president Iyorchia Ayu emerges consensus candidate for North Central

Former Senate President, Iyorchia Ayu from Benue State, has emerged the consensus candidate for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party for the North Central zone.

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, who is currently the only PDP Governor from the North Central zone, announced the decision after a meeting of stakeholders which held at the Benue State Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, late on Tuesday.

Ortom, who briefed reporters after the meeting, said, “This is stakeholders’ meeting of central PDP in continuation of finding consensus candidates for the national chairmanship of a party.

“Looking for someone with the capacity with the commitment, love and passion for our party. We met here for several hours.

“Among the five persons that were contesting, the leadership of our party from North Central unanimously agreed to sponsor former Senate President Iyorchia Ayu as national chairman of our party .

“There was no voting, we all agreed that he is the right person for this job at this time.

“Tomorrow (today Wednesday) the northern stakeholders of our party, the PDP, are going to meet.

“So, he will be presented to the northern caucus of the party. I think that by the grace of God, they will also accept him.“

He explained that other geo-political zones were free to present their candidates , saying, “we will discuss and agree.“

Those who attended the meeting included former Senate presidents David Mark, Bukola Saraki, and Iyorchia Ayu himself.

Others include former Kogi State Governor, Idris Ibrahim; PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan; former Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu; and former Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, among others.
