Super Falcons Suffer Worst ever Defeat

On a dreadful night in Le Mans, Montpellier forward Valerie Gauvin netted a hat-trick for France as an experimental Nigeria side suffered an 8-0 drubbing in Friday’s international friendly.

The defeat was the joint-largest for Nigeria senior women team with the reigning African champions also having suffered 8-0 defeats at the hands of Norway at the 1995 Fifa Women’s World Cup and Germany in an international friendly in 2010.

While the loss was a crushing blow to the Thomas Dennerby-led women, it was a fantastic result for France, who are hosting the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

‎Corinne Diacre’s side had an inspiring 14 shots on target on a night of total dominance, a far cry from the Super Falcons’ lone try, Goal writes.

With Nigerian ladies licking their wounds, it was also a day to remember for Gauvin, who netted her first hat trick for France, and the first for the side since a match in 2013.

The Falcons tough were missing the services of influential forward and reigning African Female Player of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, and they can find consolation in the thoughts that it can’t get worse going forward.
