Classy Table Tennis star, Funke Oshonaike would lead out Team Nigeria at the Opening ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympics at the mythical Maracana stadium on Friday, August 5.
According to Sports Vanguard, the elegant ping ponger has been named assistant Team captain to John Mikel Obi and would undoubtedly treasure being the country’s flagbearer at her sixth Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Another table tennis star, Segun Toriola – passed off for Team Nigeria’s captaincy at Rio 2016 in favour of Mikel – will be making history at the Games as his incredible willpower and perseverance sees him become the first Nigerian with seven appearances at the Olympics.
Meanwhile, Seven wrestlers, five females and two males, who remain the main medal hopes of the country in Rio, depart Nigeria today for the Games.
They are (females), Mercy Genesis, Odunayo Adekuruoye, Aminat Adeniyi, Blessing Oborududu and Hannah Reuben; while the two males are Amas Daniel and Soso Tamara.
“If you talk about efforts, we have done well and put in over 100% for this Games. All we need is prayers from our people and luck on the wrestlers,” said wrestling coach Daniel Igali who won Gold medal for Canada in the Olympic.
Unlike other athletes that have been complaining of inadequate preparation, Igali said that his wrestlers have been preparing for the Rio Olympics since 2013.
“We’re ready but I’m not making promises”, he modestly said.
“I’ll be happy if they will approve our sparring partners to travel. They’re the ones who keep these wrestlers in tip-top shape”.
