World heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has promised a grand visit to his hometown Sagamu in Ogun State in the coming weeks.

Joshua, 28, made the promise after his IBF and WBA world title defence against Cameroon-born Frenchman Carlos Takam at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff, Saturday.

Joshua, whose father and mother are from Sagamu, had prepared for the visit in collaboration with the Sagamu Youth Congress after his epic victory over former world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in April, but had to call it off due to his hectic schedule.

But in an interesting turn of events after his latest fight, spokesman for the SYC, Ayodele Osho, said the youth body had contacted the champion through one of his promoters to facilitate his visit to Nigeria, Punch writes.

“It is another exciting moment in the annals of Sagamu that our brother is progressing well in his chosen field,” he said.

“Before his first fight, we have been identifying with him and we let him know that we are supporting him and behind him in all his fights. The youths of Sagamu are expecting him home anytime he comes because he has promised us that he will visit Sagamu whenever he comes to Nigeria.

“We got in contact with him through one of his promoting outfits. The promoters have made it clear to us that he (Joshua) is making plans to come home and a visit to Sagamu is on the cards.”

Nigeria had a strong delegation to Joshua’s title defence, with Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, Govenor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State among others ringside in Wales.

Joshua had promised to bring a heavyweight title fight to Nigeria in his amiable bid to raise the green and white flag higher on the global stage.
