The Lagos and Ogun state police command are currently investigating the death of a police sergeant identified as Yusuf Hadi, who was ambushed and shot dead by suspected militants in a boat robbery in Ogun state.

According to PUNCH, the gunmen attacked Yusuf Hadi, who was attached to the Police Mobile Force 43, two female passengers and the boat operator on Monday around the Agbara Bridge, towards Totowu community in Ogun State. The militants, also believed to be pipeline vandals, reportedly robbed the two female passengers of their phones and money, before attacking Hadi.

The vandals were said to have referred to the deceased sergeant as ‘the enemy’ before pumping bullets into his body. The boat operator and the two women quickly ferried Hadi to Ishuti in Igando, Lagos, where he was rushed to a private hospital by policemen at the Igando division; sadly he did not survive the attack.

The chairman of the boat operators, Ishuti River Unit, Alhaji Nurudeen Olorunfemi has urged the government to provide military surveillance around the Agbara Bridge, which he stated was notorious for attacks by militants.

It could happen to anyone. I urge the government to station military officers around the Agbara Bridge. That area is notorious for militants’ attacks. If the government ensures security on the waterways, this will not happen again” he said.

He also implored residents to take safety measures by reporting any strange boat to the police and adhering to the regulations given by the state government.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the killing and also stated that the Lagos command was working with the Ogun State Police Command to get to the root of the incident.
