The Federal Government has extended the deadline for the ongoing national identification number (NIN) and subscriber identity module (SIM) linkage exercise by four weeks.
In a statement on Friday by Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, the extension was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday.
The new deadline is now May 6, 2021.
Meanwhile, the Minister announced on Thursday that Nigerians without NIN risk spending 14 years in prison as stated in the country’s constitution.
Citizens who transact business like open a bank account, pay taxes, etc without having NIN are culpable of committing a criminal offence, punishable by imprisonment Pantami said.
