Enugu Rangers Officials Robbed of N4m by Unknown Gunmen
Things aren’t letting up for Nigerian League side Enugu Rangers as their officials were on Friday robbed of the sum of N4m on their way from a bank by unidentified men.
This comes at a delicate period for the reigning NPFL champions who’re putting up a terrible defence of their title having also been bundled out of the Caf Champions League.
According to Punch, the money was for the club’s expenses for their first and second leg CAF Confederation Cup clash with Zesco United of Zambia.
Rangers are set to host the first leg of the clash at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu on Sunday before travelling to Zambia next week for the second leg.
The incident has been confirmed by spokesman for the club, Foster Chime, who said the money was for the payment of the officials for the first leg in Enugu.
“Some officials of the accounts department of the club were robbed of N4m on Friday morning at gun point. They had gone to the bank to withdraw the cash and were taking it to the club’s office located on Abakaliki Road in GRA before the robbers struck,” he said.
“The money is actually for the running around and the payment of the officials who will take part in the first leg of the third round of the Confederation Cup on Sunday. But this development will not affect the match in anyway.
“We have reported the matter to the Police and they have begun their investigations into it. It is really a sad development.”
The unfortunate incident brings to the fore the issue of home clubs settling officials’ bills in the African game, which not only tends to affect officiating, but also raises safety concerns.
