Manchester City have been crowned Premier League champions for the 2017/18 campaign after bitter rivals Manchester United suffered a rare home defeat to basement club West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford Sunday.

West Brom secured the unlikely victory thanks to a Jay Rodriguez header from Chris Brunt’s corner as United failed to clear their lines to leave City with an unassailable 16-point lead over Jose Mourinho’s side at the top of the table.

It’s the first league title for Pep Guardiola since moving to the Etihad in the summer of 2016, and a thoroughly deserved one after a near perfect campaign.

They were denied what would have been the most glorious of coronations last weekend when United came from two goals down to stage stunning a 3-2 comeback win at the Etihad, but their fans weren’t to wait for too long as the enemies next door ended up gifting them the trophy.

The title makes up for what had hitherto been a difficult week for City, as they were knocked out of Europe by Liverpool, days after capitulating to United in a run of three successive defeats.

Guardiola, who becomes the first Spanish manager to win the Premier League, had claimed he would be on the golf course on Sunday afternoon and would not watch the game as he was sure United would win, but it’s a good bet his golfing session has been cut short to pop the champagne for a job well done.
