NACOLM Inaugurates Training On Operational Level Logistics In ECOWAS Peace Support Operations

The Nigerian Army College of Logistics and Management (NACOLM) inaugurated the Operational Level Logistics in Economy of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Peace Support Operations Training in conjunction with ECOWAS at the TY Buratai Hall, NACOLM Permanent Site Ojo, Lagos.

In his welcome address, the Commandant NACOLM Major General Adekunle Adeyinka expressed delight and honour to welcome participants to the maiden edition opening ceremony. He added that the training is targeted at participants from Member States who could be deployed as logisticians in ECOWAS Peace Support Operations (PSOs). He stressed that the main objective of the training is to enhance the knowledge of the participants to enable them to perform logistics functions in a typical ECOWAS PSO.

While addressing the participants, the Commandant stressed that the rise of security challenges across the ECOWAS Sub Region has often necessitated the deployment of PSOs. More so, for any PSO to succeed in its mandate, the logistics support for all components of that mission must be well planned and executed. He added that it,, therefore becomes necessary to have well-trained personnel with expertise across the entire supply chain spectrum that can deliver the required logistics support to all components of the PSO.

Furthermore, General Adeyinka stated that it is in this regard that the Department of Peace Keeping and Regional Security, ECOWAS Commission in collaboration with NACOLM has organized the training for Personnel of the ECOWAS Standby Force.

The Commandant also thanked the Chief of Army Staff, Nigerian Army, Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya whose support and interest in the growth of the College has been unwavering. He further appreciated the guests for their interest and support and also the Peace Keeping and Regional Security Department of the ECOWAS Commission for making the training a reality.

Speaking during the ceremony, Mr Danjuma Aku who represented the Director of Peacekeeping and Regional Security of the ECOWAS Commission, appreciated the participants for being part of the training. He stressed that political instability and security challenges are major threats to human security that affect the social, economic, political, and cultural development of societies in our region. He added that ECOWAS has taken measures to manage these conflicts and instabilities.

He further stated that ECOWAS has deployed several PSOs in the past within the region, one of the key components of such deployment is logistic support. Logistic support for any operation is very critical as this can make or mar the success of such operations. He added that to enhance the success of future ECOWAS PSOs, they have decided to achieve it through training her staff on how to plan, deploy, manage, and liquidate ECOWAS PSOs.

In attendance were NACOLM faculty and administrative staff officers, esteemed resource persons, and student officers of Logistics Staff Course (LSC) 20/23 amongst other guests.
