Nigeria Selected for ATscale Global Partnership: Advancing Assistive Technology for All

Dr. James David Lalu, PhD, NPOM, Executive Secretary of the National Commission For Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), spearheaded a significant meeting with representatives from the Federal Ministry of Health and the ATscale Global Partnership for Assistive Technology. Led by Anil Kashyap, Senior Programme Manager, Country and Markets, the delegation from ATscale provided insights into their collaborative efforts to scale up access to assistive technology in Nigeria.

The meeting focused on Nigeria’s selection as one of the countries to benefit from ATscale’s initiatives, aimed at advancing assistive technology and inclusive education for persons with disabilities. Discussions centered on the implementation process, including the development of an Expression of Interest (EOI) to be submitted to the government.

ATscale emphasized its commitment to collaborating with relevant ministries and agencies to ensure the success of the program. The Vision and Hearing Program, targeting school-age children with vision and hearing impairments, will be implemented in 11 countries, including Nigeria. The program aims to provide access to assistive products and integrate children into the education system through government-supported initiatives.

Dr. James David Lalu shared personal insights into the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in accessing education and highlighted the importance of government support in addressing these barriers. He underscored the NCPWD’s commitment to advocating for the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities and welcomed ATscale’s partnership in advancing these objectives.

The selection of Nigeria for the Vision and Hearing Program, targeting school-age children with vision and hearing impairments, is a testament to the strides made in prioritizing inclusive education and accessibility for PWDs. Dr. Lalu’s dedication to promoting the integration of PWDs into all aspects of society has played a pivotal role in positioning Nigeria as a key partner in the ATscale Global Partnership.

As Nigeria embarks on this collaborative journey, the NCPWD and ATscale reaffirm their dedication to ensuring that assistive technology reaches those who need it most. By working together, they aim to create a more inclusive society where every individual, regardless of ability, can fulfill their potential.
