Nigerian company wins Commonwealth prize for environment solution pitch

Loop Recycler Tech, a Nigerian waste management company, has emerged as one of the top three winners at the Commonwealth-wide ideas contest.

Making this disclosure in a statement made available to Peoples Gazette on Friday, the Commonwealth disclosed that the Nigerian waste management company emerged third behind British waste management firm Plastic-I and Terangi Team from Malaysia.

The three winners will share a prize pool of £20,000 plus over £85,000 in satellite data and cloud computing services.

Winners of the contest Plastic-I seek to help tackle marine pollution by combining satellite data with machine learning to create an open-source map of floating pollution.

The Malaysian team came second for their pitch to create a technology platform to monitor environmental elements such as climate change and water quality while analysing potential threats.

Loop Recyclers Tech, a smart waste management company, aims to end plastic pollution and preserve the ecosystem of air, water, land, plants, animals and human life.

The Nigerian waste management company seeks to use geospatial data to monitor and improve recycling rates for plastics, preventing them from reaching rivers and the ocean.

The Commonwealth contest received entries from more than 80 teams after which six were shortlisted to contest for the £20,000 prize pool to be shared amongst the top three teams.
