Nigeria To Axe It Out With Cameroon and Algeria In World Cup Draw

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been handed a tough group in the final round of African qualifiers for the Russia 2018 World Cup at a ceremony held in Cairo today.

The three-time African champions will face perennial rivals Cameroon, high-flying Algeria and 2012 African champions Zambia in a hard-hitting Group B of the African zone.

Having missed out on the last African Cup of Nations and crashing out early for the 2017 event, Nigeria were seeded in Pot two of the draws, setting up an inevitable meeting with any of the top 5-ranked sides on the continent.

That turned out to be Algeria, with fierce rivals Cameroon drawn from pot three and the Chipolopolo of Zambia completing the “Group of Death”.

The Salisu Yusuf-led side has it all to do if they’re to make a sixth appearance in the Mundial.

Reigning African champions Ivory Coast were drawn in Group C alongside West African rivals Mali and North African powerhouse Morocco, while the Black Stars of Ghana will battle with Burkina Faso, Cape Verde and South Africa for a fourth consecutive finals appearance.

The Complete Draw

Group A: Tunisia, Libya, DR Congo and Guinea
Group B: Zambia, Cameroon, Algeria and Nigeria
Group C: Gabon, Mali, Cote d’Ivoire and Morocco
Group D: Burkina Faso, South Africa, Ghana, Cape Verde
Group E: Ghana, Egypt, Congo, Uganda
